As soon as we arrived at the Alaya Ubud, a gorgeous boutique hotel in Ubud, a sense of relaxation flooded over me. I had been a little worried that we wouldn’t like spending time at a luxury hotel in Bali, since this was my first experience at one. Turns out luxury is awesome – who knew?! Ok, maybe you all knew… I loved every moment at Alaya Ubud. It started almost immediately with the staff, they were always kind, smiling and going above and beyond. The service was incredible: attentive without being annoying.
The location was perfect, a very short walk to the famous Monkey Forest and several great restaurants, and right in the center of Ubud. Our room had a small terrace with a view of a beautiful rice field, and watching the sunrise every morning (dammit, jetlag!) was breathtaking.
The beds were so comfortable and Dan had a seriously rough time tearing me out of the hotel robes to explore every day. Note to Dan: there is absolutely nothing wrong with spending the day in a gorgeous hotel and never changing out of your hotel robe.
The attention to detail didn’t stop there. The toiletries in the room were fantastic, the lavender eucalyptus lotion and cinnamon conditioner were particularly amazing.
The pool was large and extremely quiet, perfect for reading and relaxing, possibly with a couple adult beverages. The towels were soft and huge, and the lounge chairs were so comfortable. I mean, you guys can see why I didn’t want to leave, right?
But there’s more! Every day Alaya Ubud hosts a complimentary afternoon tea (or coffee, if you prefer), with Balinese sweets. The staff even gave us iced lattes to go on our last day since we would miss our final afternoon tea!
You all know I’m saving the best for last… the food. The complimentary breakfast was incredible, and left us full all the way to dinner. It actually made my life a little difficult, since I have approximately ZERO willpower and I wanted to try more restaurants in Ubud. Try to feel bad for me, OK?
Every breakfast starts out with fruit and yogurt, followed by a basket of pastries served with amazing jellies. The pineapple cinnamon and jackfruit were my favorites.
Do yourself a favor and get the eggs benedict while you’re there. They do it right. Although, it seems they do everything right, right?
I am admittedly not a spa buff, since my first massage was just barely a year ago, but the spa at Alaya was incredible. We couldn’t get a late checkout from the hotel, so they held our bags while we spent the morning indulging at the spa at the hotel. One and a half hours of pure bliss, followed by great cinnamon tea and cookies (they really like their cinnamon at Alaya Ubud: cinnamon tea, jelly and conditioner!).
I found it difficult to pull myself away from the comforts of Alaya Ubud, and for good reason, but we did manage to take a few day trips to see the temples and rice terraces in Bali, as well as make out way around the city of Ubud.
This might be one of the best splurges we’ve ever done while traveling, and it was worth every penny!
What’s been your biggest splurge when traveling? Would you splurge on a luxury hotel?
